Beyond Unprofessional

At last week’s Regular Town Commission Meeting, the two prevailing candidates of the recent Town Commission election were sworn into office. It is an event that should be met with respect, at least in knowing that photos will be taken. It is utterly unconscionable that our mayor, Alison Dennington, who is the titular head of our Town Commission for ceremonial purposes, and one who would be expected to present herself with professionalism and decorum when representing the Town as mayor and presiding officer, would choose to wear a black t-shirt with an overt message emblazoned with the message, I WALK THE LINE. Not only is the sheer donning of such attire unprofessional, the meaning of the message has mixed connotations. Some of us are wise enough to know that it is the title of a Johnny Cash song, a controversial songwriter/performer from the 1950s. You can look up the various meanings of the message by doing a simple Google search to discover that none of them are something that we would hope to see our mayor wear on such an occassion. Many people were offended by the rebellious nature of the display. Instead of fostering unity in our community, Mayor Dennington seemed intent on continuing more discord and drama from the center seat on the dais.

Incoming Commissioners Dr. Terry Cronin and Sherri Quarrie, the outgoing Commissioners Dawn Barlow and Robert Baldwin, as well as the majority of the residents in the Town of Melbourne Beach who voted in this past election, ALL deserved more respect from our mayor. In fact, EVERYONE deserves more respect than she is capable of giving… even those that think they are against us. We truly are here for the good of the entire Town. Truth and Accuracy Matter will continue to shine the light on issues that affect our town’s governance, reputation and solvency. Currently, we have a mayor who negatively challenges every one of those. We shall remain staunch in our defense of the Town.

We look forward to the end of Mayor Dennington’s term. It won’t come soon enough.
