Signgate, Part 3
Walters’ accusations about stolen campaign signs sounds like the boy who cries WOLF!
Without fail, every election cycle, Steve Walters goes on a sign rampage in one way or another. This year, since he is a candidate himself with political yard signs, Walters is up to his old tricks. Today he posted, “Stealing campaign signs is a crime”, he went on to describe, “about 1:00 AM, two adults stole several of my signs on Pine Street and were witnessed by a resident taking out his recyclables.”

Walters is anxiously awaiting the police department to investigate this crime and states, “I look forward to the arrest and conviction of these people.” (Estimated sign value is $75 … and is considered a misdemeanor.)
The post attracted sympathy from only two residents. Missing campaign signs happen with every candidate, in every election. Mr. Walters, stating that you “look forward to the arrest and conviction of these people” is a bit harsh. The incident can certainly be reported to the police, but for Mr. Walters to make such a dramatic public announcement about it is just another example of how he blows things way out of proportion. We have heard this same story from Mr. Walters so many times over the years, it’s reminiscent of the boy who cried wolf…. no one is listening.
What IS important to the residents in our town is honest and factual representation of the candidate’s political positions when asking a neighbor to place a sign IN their yard. Truth and Accuracy Matter has been receiving daily tips from neighbors about campaign sign placement and other concerns as this election begins to heat up. CLICK HERE for the latest. Truth and Accuracy Matter did not remove these signs. The homeowner asked the neighbor who placed them to remove them.
Mr. Walters openly disparages so-called “millionaires and vacation rental owners” in his Nextdoor posts. Yet, his political campaign signs have popped up in several of their yards. Does he honestly think that once these people realize his blatant distain for any neighbor who may be “millionaires”, or owners of legal “vacation rental” properties, would want to keep his sign in their yards? On a regular basis on Nexrdoor, Walters openly denigrates successful professionals that live in our town like realtors, developers, mortgage brokers, investors, doctors and other successful professions. These are good people in our town. They do not deserve his disrespect! This political rhetoric causes divisiveness and unwarranted drama.
As the election approaches, residents say they want truth and honesty from all candidates — both in their public statements and in how they treat their neighbors.
