Walters Tells Mayor to Deceive Town

In a small town like Melbourne Beach, trust is the foundation of our community. When elected officials or candidates betray that trust, it undermines the integrity of our local government and risks the future we all share. Today, we’re compelled to address a critical issue: the deceptive tactics of Town Commission candidate Steve Walters, and why residents must remain vigilant against his misinformation.

Attached to this article is a video clip from this weeks Town Commission meeting. In it, Mr. Walters is seen advising Mayor Alison Dennington to “use a code name, use it anytime you want. Don’t tell the Town who it is.” Such backroom suggestions erode transparency and raise alarming questions about Walters’ commitment to honest governance. Public officials work for us—the residents—and secrecy and deception have no place in our Community.  Mr. Walters, you should be ashamed of yourself, telling our Mayor that she should blatantly lie.

This incident is not isolated. Steve Walters has a documented history of dishonesty. Most notably he lied about the truth by not admitting that he was forced to resign as the Melbourne Beach Police Chief 24 years ago.  With a reputation known for his deception, Mr. Walters is attempting to rewrite factual history. In a recent Nextdoor post, Walters claimed he resigned voluntarily as our town’s police chief in order to run for Town Commission. This is patently false. The Town Commission position he sought paid next to nothing, and he and his wife had just purchased  their home in the Town of Melbourne Beach six months prior to him being forced to resign rather than be terminated, making his excuse implausible. Why the dishonesty? Because Walters knows his past also damages his credibility.

Walters has weaponized platforms like Nextdoor to spread half-truths and outright lies, preying on residents who may not have time to fact-check every claim. But misinformation is a poison. When candidates manipulate narratives to serve their personal interests, we as a community pay the price.

Melbourne Beach deserves leaders who value transparency, not those who hide behind “code names” and rewritten histories. Walters’ behavior continues to  exemplify a “wolf in sheep’s clothing”—someone who cloaks self-interest, and has no problem lying to achieve his personal agenda.

This is a call to action for every resident: verify before you trust. Get to know the candidates. Don’t take social media posts or campaign slogans at face value. Attend meetings or watch them online, and seek documented, credible sources.

Steve Walters’ track record of dishonesty should disqualify him from representing the Town of Melbourne Beach. Sadly, integrity is not required to get on the ballot. We cannot afford leaders who prioritize secrecy over service or ego over ethics. Let’s champion integrity, demand transparency, and ensure our votes go to candidates who respect the truth.

Melbourne Beach is more than a town—it’s our home. Let’s protect it.
